Throwback Thursday: Gifts for Norah

Sorry it’s late! Putting both this one and the one for today out now! πŸ™ˆ

Over the past couple of years, I’ve gotten to know a young lady name Norah (mind you this is not NΓ³ra, the baby I watch) and her family as I had her in kindergarten SACC and then became one of the main babysitters for their family. Because of some commitments the kids’ parents were involved with this past spring, I was basically a part-time nanny for their family and I loved the opporturnitity to really bond with both Norah and her little brother.

Norah is a force of nature and so sassy. Oh so sassy! But she’s also thoughtful and caring and a friend to everyone. I actually haven’t seen her in about a month and am really looking forward to watching her tonight!

On Norah’s 7th birthday this year, she received some special gifts from me. I spoiled her. The only thing I don’t have a picture of is a little crocheted pouch I made to give her a locket. It was pink with a scalloped edge and used a button enclosure. I stitched a small “N” in the corner because I love anything with my initials on it. I have a locket with a photo of my nephew from the day he was born and Norah loves to open it and told me once that she wanted a locket. I found a silver one with pink roses printed on it from Claire’s. I put the pouch into a big fluffy purple heart pillow with a white pocket. The pattern was by Ashleigh at Sewrella, but I tweaked it just a little. I used two strands of Bernat Blanket Yarn and I might have used a 12 mm hook, but I don’t remember. Norah has a purple beanbag chair with white polka dots so I tried to make it match tha

I also tried my first amigurumi pattern. It was by the Friendly Red Fox, the tiny bear ballerina. For my first ami, I think she turned out SO lovely. Norah named her Lily.

Norah was SO excited with all of her birthday gifts. Her mom, my super sweet friend I made the sparkly Lana kimono for, told me she kept saying “I can’t believe she MADE me my presents!’ Best motivation ever.

WIP Wednesday – August 30, 2017

Hey y’all,

I went back to college this week. LOVE getting to see my friends and begin learning more about the field I love so much. Working with children is a huge passion of mine and I’m always excited to be around people who share that passion. Also, I get to watch baby NΓ³ra (from a few posts ago) two days a week. It makes me super happy.

So before I tell you about my WIPs, I want to pre-apologize if I’m having trouble keeping up with everything on here. I think either my WIP Wednesday will have to become a monthly post with pictures every time or keep it weeekly and pictures as I can. My WIP pics are never great because I often take them at night, when I am home and have time to crochet, which will be less now that I’m back in school  πŸ˜‘ Thank you to anyone who is actually reading these posts. I do like the accountability of this blog and at least writing my weekly progress. But, school hast to be my priority. Thanks for understanding. Also, if you don’t, you should follow my instagram. I post in stories a lot about my day to day and I try to post pics of what I’m working on. πŸ˜‰ As a little surprise though, I have TWO new posts coming this week featuring some projects I did earlier this year including my first amigurumi and c2c. If you follow my Insta, you’ve seen it all before but I do tell a more detailed narrative.

No βœ… or 🐸

I didn’t work on the doll project or espadrilles this week.

Project Ice Cream Coozies is still ongoing. Nothing new there this week, just making some simple bases while I commute. I am delivering them on September 23rd so I have time. I don’t have a goal number but I’ll probably have about 20 if I had to guess.

I spent my last day of summer break with my beautiful blanket. I finished the first skein of mandala yarn and it came out to approximately 10.5 inches. Based on that, it will be about 8 feet 9 inches with the 10 skeins I have. I bought the only 6 at Walmart over the weekend! My WM is carrying several kinds of the Lion Brand Mandala yarn as well as Bernat Pop. Love! Anyway, this beauty is just so lovely. It will be tricky to try to make the colors line up but I’m going to really really really try not to let my OCD get the better of me with it. I think I’m going to love this blanket though.

The baby blanket is looking so good. I am really happy I went back and made the change to HDC and added a chevron to make it an even eight. When I fold it in quarters, it just looks so much nicer. I’ve been debating what I want to make with it. There are so many super cute hats and booties out there. I love Repeat Crafter Me’s hat she made when her daughter Zoe was born. It has a little tie on top like the ones at the hospital. I alos love Ashleigh at Sewrella’s set she did for her son, Parker. She uses either a front or back post DC to give a ribbed effect around the border fo the hat and on the booties. I may end up doing two hats. One for when he’s first born and a second for him to grow into. I’m so indecisive I’m just like let’s just do all of them, lol. If anyone knows any cute beanie or bootie patterns, please email me the link! I’d love to see what you’d reccommend!

Until next time!

Joey

WIP Wednesday – August 23, 2017

First day of school where I work in before and after care and my first day back to college is Monday! Anyone want to tell me where summer went?

Crochet has been taking a backseat as I had classroom setup days and beginning of the year trainings. I have to get recertifited in first aid and fire safety annually and CPR/AED biannually. But I do have some WIP updates for you!

βœ… Sparkly Lana – I finished crocheting this beauty. I still need to add a fringe but since she won’t be in a crochet bag, she gets a check. I’m planning to do a Lana post soon with completed pics on all the Lana Kimonos I’ve done so far.

No 🐸🐸🐸!!!

Dolls – I did finish the purple dress!

Espadrilles  I did pick up the one I have almost done to try to do one of the last steps, however, something was misaligned and I had to 🐸 it. I guess that I kind of did have a 🐸 but not a whole project or anything. I didn’t have a chance to try again but hopefully soon. 🀞🏻

Ice Cream Coozies – I designed a pineapple appliquΓ© and sewed to to a gray one. Seriously the cutest thing. I just need to get a pint of ice cream to do some nice pics! I really hope they do well at the Block Party. Also, my friend who works in the same school district as I do is partly in charge of getting the teachers gifts at Christmastime and she said she loved the idea of giving ice cream coozies to them so I’ll only do cash and carry if she decides to go another way, butt I’m hopeful!

Baby blanket – Not this week, but that will be a pretty good take along project when I start school to do in the car, at least while it’s not very big. For me, a take along project needs to be smaller and easy enough that I don’t need a pattern. It may require some counting, like this one, but I don’t like to have to refer to a pattern, especially for just my short rides (15-20 minutes) to my school.

NEW PROJECT (I need to decide on an emoji for new projects, open to suggestions) – Mandala Me Blanket. I few months ago, I bought several cakes of Lion Brand Mandala yarn in the Genie colorway (on eBay) because the mint green to gray is just super me. I made a project with it but still had 4 skeins left. I could make a few smaller projects with it but I decided I really wanted a lightweight crochet blanket with the yarn. I looked at the 4 skeins and figured out the order I would do them in so the colors at the beginning and end were the same or close enough that I could find the matches. It won’t be perfect striping because each one is unique. It says so on the labels but I’ve also noticed that from working with it previously. It will take a lot of time and maybe some more yarn but it’s a good incentive for me to work on projects for others first and then put in a row or two. I’m using a K hook and half double crochet stitch to help it work up a little more quickly but not be too loose.

That’s it for active projects. I am thinking that over Labor Day Weekend, I’d like to take some time to whip up all of my undone Happy Yarn Mail. I have 3/5 projects that I haven’t done yet and I’ll get another one next week so I’m thinking that it would be fun do over the long weekend. I’ll havre 4 projects then and 4 days to do them. If all goes well, I’ll write a HYM post showing off the 4 projects as well as the 2 I’ve actually been able to squeak out.

Joey

National Granny Square Day – Sunflower Afghan πŸŒ»

This post is a week late. Just my life these days y’all. This was my first granny square project and I’m super proud of it!

For my maternal grandmother’s 80th birthday, I crocheted this “lapghan” for the back of the couch at her little summer cottage which is all decked out in sunflowers.

Nana LOVED her beautiful gift!

WIP Wednesday – August 16, 2017

Not the most productive week, but things are moving along. πŸ˜‰

βœ… Rainbow Lana Kimono – It came out bigger than anticipated (like my last one) but I think it will be cozy for my friend to wear. She works at a bank so I have a feeling it will keep her cozy in the coming chily months.

βœ… Elphaba – She can’t come and go by bubble (like Galinda) but she’s headed to my aunt to be included in a pre-college care package. 😊

Espadrilles – Nill. Again. Poor baby is going to grow out of them before they are done! πŸ™„

Dolls – Again, no time to work on them. Things are crazytown over here!

Sparkly Lana – Progress! I take her to church with me and crochet during worship. I find that my brain allows me to focus so much better when my hands are busy.

Baby Blanket. So I 🐸ed and started over. I figured out why you’re supposed to do it in BLO. It makes the color change less obvious and I really hated how it looked on one side. Also because it had 7 ridges, when you folded it in quarters, it got all wonky. I started over and added another ridge so it’s wider.I am alos working in HDC instead of SC and the ripples are much looser and less sharp. it was like a 90 degree angle before and now it’s like a 110 maybe? I’d have to use a protractor! 😜

Ice Cream Coozies – I have a couple crocheted without their embellishments. I designed this 3D pineapple. not sure if I love it but all the other pineapples I keep finding are coming out too big, or they curl too much when I use a bigger hook. I am going to test out doing embellishments with Lion Brand 24/7 cotton so it’s still in the cotton/polyester family, but I’m not sure hoe they will look and if they’ll attach properly. Thoughts and ideas welcome!

I think that’s it. I wanted to squeak this in before mindight! 😘

Throwback Thursday: A Headband for NΓ³ra

In my last post, I mentioned that I have every color of Lion Brand 24/7 Cotton yarn. It’s become a favorite of mine and I use it for a number of things.

I’m gradually telling the stories of past projects and I’m trying hard not to tell them all at once so just for now, this is one reason I bought a lot of colors (in addition to the fact that they were Add On items on Amazon aka super cheap!)

I am a student at Millersville University and I had a teacher and class that changed my life forever. The professor of the class is now my dear friend. By the end of the semester, I was regularly having lunch with her and her baby daughter one or two days a week. Sometimes just us and sometimes with one or two people from our class. I am enjoying summer but ya’ll just writing this story is making me ready to see her and her girl again. πŸ’•

Anyway, I came across this DARLING pattern by Jess at Make and Do Crew. She’s the real deal, so fabulous guys. I loved this sweet headband pattern and I was trying to think of who I could make it for.

Then WHAM it hit me. I whipped it up in no time at all (less than 24 hours from when I started). I did decide to leave off a few flowers to keep it really minimal and simple. When we were out to lunch, I snuck it on the baby’s head when her mama slipped away to the ladies’ room. NΓ³ra kept it on the whole lunchtime and it just looked so pretty. Marion, her mama, was so suprised and thought it was completely perfect. 😍

Not the best pictures but that little face completely melts me every time.

I’d love to start making and selling these on Etsy, but for now I’m too limited on time so it’s an eventual dream right now…. πŸ˜‰

I Scream You Scream, We All Scream For Ice Cream! πŸ¦

A few weeks ago, Ashleigh at Sewrella created a super cute quick and easy ice cream coozie using on of my FAVORITE yarns, Lion Brand Fast Track.

I made some market totes with the yarn earlier this year and have been looking for something to do with the scraps.

I took her pattern of a solid ice cream coozie and made it my own by changing colors to create stripes and adding a rose to make it pretty. And this is how she came out. 😍

My aunt fell in LOVE with my coozie too and said I should make some for the Ocean City, NJ Block Party this fall. She always has a space where she sells little pretties she’s made. I’ve brought different things over the years for her to sell there and usually have made a few dollars. She thinks they will sell big and if I have extra I can list them on Etsy or sell them at craft shows myself. I usuallly participate in one or two around the holidays. I also sell handmade items in the faculty room at the school where I work. Teachers LOVE cash and carry.

My aunt said all of them should have some kind of embellishment. I want to try out some different ones with this yarn and possibly Lion Brand 24/7 Cotton (I have gradually bought that in every color) if the FT ones are just too bulky/heavy. I’m going to toy with an emoji, since those are so popular, as well as flowers, hearts, and any other appliquΓ©s I can make with the colors available. I ordered FT in all 12 colors from JoAnn’s since they were on sale. πŸ™ˆ

Ideas for color combos and appliquΓ©s are more than welcome!

WIP Wednesday – August 9, 2017

My favorite time of the (crochet) week1

βœ…βœ…βœ… and 🐸🐸🐸

βœ… – My coral Lana Kimono…. The yarn I used for this project made it a little looser than I had aniticipated.  I may frog it. Not sure yet. I didn’t tie any closure knots when i sewed up the sides. You’ll be first to know when I make a decision. πŸ˜‰

βœ… – Rainbow Lana Kimono. I love how it came out and I think my friend will to. 🀞🏻

🐸 – Charcoal Lana Kimono. Bc it was the same yarn as mine, I frogged it and started over using less chains to start. My friend that I’m making that for is very petite so smaller the better. (I don’t have that problem, lol)

🐸 – Fast Track Lana Kimono. I think it was going to be too big. And i needed the yarn. Does anyone else frog a project because they need the yarn for another one?

Elphaba. She is coming out so cute. I was trying to have her done for my aunt since I was going to see her over the weekend, but it just didn’t happen. πŸ™„ I’m hoping to finish her in the next day or two and can send it to her. I lost my E hook somewhere in my travels over the weekend so I just got a new one from Amazon yesterday.

Espadrilles. I haven’t touched them this week. Too many other projects and just not feeling motivated to work on them. πŸ˜‘

Baby blanket. In my last post, I showed the project I began on Sunday afternoon. I’ve only made a little progress since then, adding a few more white rows and beginning the navy. So in love with this guy.

Princess Doll Project. I have not touched this project this week either. I did buy some little embellishments for the doll dresses at JoAnn’s last week. I think they are going to look super cute!
There’s my progress for the week, thanks for checking in on what I’m up to!

Oops, I Did It Again…

I started another project. Let’s be fair though, I had good reasons to. Sort of.

I lost my E hook which is ironically the one I need to finish Elphaba (new one is coming tomorrow from Amazon).

I couldn’t find my N hook to work on any Lanas. I have another series of mini projects I planned to start because a.) they’re quick and b.) they are going to be sold at a craft show so yay profits! (More on that another day)

Also I did finish the Lana kimono I was goi no to wear to my cousin’s wedding on Saturday. I decided I didn’t like it with my outfit tho so I didn’t ‘t wear it. And I wanted an easy project that I didn’t have to closely follow the pattern for.

The little project bag with the pretty new skeins of yarn and they just were calling me. I couldn’t resist.

My best friend’s big sister is expecting her first baby, and found out on Thursday that it’s a boy! πŸ’™πŸ’™πŸ’™ I happened to be making my trip to JoAnn’s that night and Caron Simply Soft yarn was on sale.

I decided I wanted to do a traditional rippled afghan with modern colors, kind of an old meets new thing. Chevrons have been my pattern since before they were popular so I’ve always loved the look of these blankets. My friend really likes mint green and I had seen a really nice color combo for this blanket in a boy palette with mint green as one of the colors. (Mint green is my favorite color btw)

Inspiration picture. So cute right?

Yarn.

And here are the labels with the color names.

I began the chevrons last night and completed 8 rows. I am going to do between 12-16 per color for nice wide stripes of color.

I haven’t worked with this yarn much but I like it so far. The pattern has been easy to follow. I did decided to crochet in both loops vs BLO but I like it just the same.

There it is, another project to choose from… πŸ™ˆ Does anyone else have this problem?

WIP Wednesday – August 2, 2017

WIP Wednesday is one of my favorite parts of the week, sharing the progress I’ve made in my crocheting each week. I love that using a blog will give me the space to share all 7 of my current WIPs. I want to know what you’re working on too so please fee free to share your WIP Wednesday with me (or any other day)!!!

I’ll start with the easiest projects, numbers 1-4. I am working on 4 Lana Kimonos by Ashleigh at Sewrella. She’s one of my faves and I’ve learned most everything I know about crochet from her. ❀️ Β This beautiful piece is a super easy, mindless crochet project. If you can double crochet and whip stitch, you can do this! I’m working on two for me and two for gifts.

The chunky one is made from Lion Brand Fast Track yarn in Chopper Gray. I adjusted the pattern a little to make that one about the same length as the others and used a larger hook to give it those beautiful big stitches.Β I’m out of the Fast Track yarn but I’m heading to JoAnn’s tomorrow. I’m not sure if my local store carries it but if not, I’ll order more online (it’s on sale for a little over $5 right now an it’s usually $7).

The rainbow one is for one of my best friends as a belated birthday gift. She is an artist and so exuberant with bright color. When I saw Lion Brand Landscapes in Boardwalk, I knew I had to make her something. We have been to my favorite beach a few times together and always finish our day up on the boardwalk so it had that special connection too. I have one panel completed and have started the second one. I am very concientious of how the colors are laying with this piece. I don’t want the same colors to be in the same parts of the row or it will look like 2-3 colors are striping in each position. To avoid this, I change colors every few rows, making sure the color I start with is not in one of the previous in that spot. When I’m preparing to sew the pieces, I will take a photo of the full panels and this may make better sense. πŸ˜‰

This kimono is Red Heart With Love Metallic in Charcoal. I started this one a week or so ago and it was my take along project and will be again when I finish the one after this. With the color changing, I don’t usually take the rainbow one along for when I know I may have a few minutes to just work without having to think too much about a pattern. I’m about halfway done with panel one. It is for a friend’s birthday but it’s more than a month away so no pressure to finish it soon. This color way will look so pretty on her and she is such a sparkly person in my life so I love that this piece reflects that. πŸ’•

My last kimono is this pretty bright Papaya color by Red Heart With Love. I have one panel completely finished and the second one has the first two rows. I’m planning to wear it to a wedding this weekend so trying to get it cranked out! 🀞🏻

Project number 5 is for my baby nephew. He is the cutest human ever. His project is a pair of baby espadrilles. I’d really like to start selling these either premade or made to order on Etsy, but no promises! I found the pattern on Etsy. This is the first one. It just needs the toe piece attached which includes a slip stitch border around. I started this project a long time ago and kind of forgot about them and have been busy with other projects. They’ve made their way back into my bag and I’m hoping to have them finished in the next week or so. 🀞🏻

IMG_0298

Project number 6 Is my most urgent project but I’ve gotten as far as I can until my JoAnn’s trip because I need to get wire for her glasses44xzzz. 😬 She will be Elphaba from Wicked in her school uniform. My aunt commissioned me to make it for my cousin, a true thespian and lover of the land of Oz. I need wire to make Elphie’s glasses before stuffing her head and continuing the project. I will be working long and hard Friday to finish her before I see my aunt on Saturday for the previously mentioned wedding. I have found that I prefer to yarn under for my amigrumi projects which makes them smaller. I do increase the hook size accordingly, but especially when I’m using dark yarns, I don’t like the stuffing to show through. It does a little bit not as badly in projects where I did yarn over instead. I’d really like to begin contributing to Octopus for a Preemie so using the yarn under technique is good practice for that.

And last but definitely not least is project nunmber 7. I am working on a set of two princess dolls for my nieces who are 5 and 8. The original pattern is by the Friendly Red Fox and is the Princess Sophie doll. I also have her pattern for making mini ballerina animals and used that as the guideline for this doll’s body. I wanted to do a big sister/little sister set to reflect my nieces. So far, I have made the smaller doll almost entirely. This photo was from two weeks ago. I am house sitting this week and don’t have the doll to show a more updated picture, but she now has brown safety eyes and her head is stuffed and sewn shut. I have begin the piece that will be like a wig with pretty ringlets in a Wheat color by Red Heart Soft yarn. The newest thing I have completed are the purple slippers and begun the purple dress. She will also have a blue one. Both dolls will have a pink, purple, and blue dress, matching slippers for each dress, and a gold and silver crown. This is a hugely ambitious project but my nieces are growing up quickly and I wanted them to have these special dolls while they still like to play pretend together. πŸ’•

There you have it, all 7 projects I am actively working on. I have a few projects slated to begin ASAP, once I finish a few kimonos, Elphaba, and the espadrilles. The doll project is going to take a while and I try to accomplish a few pieces each week. πŸ˜‰ Thanks for your interest in seeing what I’m working on!

Love,

Joey
